Five Pirates remain in medal hunt at state wrestling

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Four of the eight Hannibal wrestlers opened the Class 3 state tournament with victories Thursday at Mizzou Arena and will wrestle Friday in the quarterfinals.

Freshman Shawn Smashey (106 pounds), sophomore Tyler Hardy (145), junior Gavin Morawitz (152) and sophomore Trevor Wilson (152) each advanced in the championship bracket, while senior Jameson White remains alive in the wrestlebacks.

Smashey (27-17) pinned Pacific sophomore Ethan Flaherty in 5:23 and will face Smithville freshman Kolby McClain in the quarterfinals. Hardy (14-11) pinned Sikeston's Cameron Gaddis in 21 seconds. He will face Rolla junior Nathan Pulliam, who is 36-0, in the quarterfinals.

Morawitz (37-4) earned a 6-0 decision over Jefferson City Helias junior Nikolai Careaga. He will face Smithville senior Mason Hedgecorth in the quarterfinals.

Wilson (42-2) pinned Carl Junction senior Isaac Shields in 2:24 and will face Belton freshman Zach Attebury in the quarterfinals.

White, wrestling at 195, suffered a 3-0 loss to Windsor Imperial senior Seif Elkhashab before rebounding to pin Kearney senior Colt Post in 3:48.

At 132, Pirates senior Matt Wilson was pinned by Platte County's Eli Rocha in 48 seconds in the opener and suffered a 16-2 major decision loss to Central senior Dawson Bevans.

At 170, Hannibal sophomore Kameron Foust lost a 6-5 decision to Neosho senior Keaton Sanders before suffering a 7-3 loss to Belton senior Robert Woltkamp.

At 220, Pirates sophomore Brady Zimmerman was pinned by Belton's Keegan Bradley in 1:37 and was eliminated after getting pinned in 1:54 by Marshfield's Eli Steffen.
