College roundup: Hawks sweep defending NAIA national champion

QUINCY -- The Quincy University men's volleyball team picked up its first victory of the season, defeating reigning NAIA national champion Benedictine-Mesa 28-26, 25-23, 25-20.

The Hawks staved off a set point in the first set with an Omari Wheeler kill to tie the set at 24. The Hawks then punctuated the win with a kills from Zach Reider and Wheeler.

Neither team led by more than two points for a majority of the second set, while a 7-4 run by the Hawks allowed them to finish off the sweep.

Wheeler finished with 17 kills and five digs, and Eddie Jakubauskas had 12 kills and six digs. QU setter Yoran Raymaekers dished out 37 assists.


Trojans earn first conference win

The Hannibal-LaGrange University men's basketball team defeated Missouri Baptist 55-53 to earn its first American Midwest Conference victory of the season.

The Trojans dominated the first half, cruising to a 10-point lead midway through the half. HLGU then went on a 12-point run to stretch their lead to 29-7. Missouri Baptist cut the deficit marginally, but the Trojans held a 31-18 lead at the half.

The Trojans' lead was never in question until Missouri Baptist's ripped off a 12-point run with just three minutes remaining in the game.

Eric Easter led the Trojans offensively with 14 points and 12 rebounds.


Trojans fall at home

The Hannibal-LaGrange University women's basketball team suffered a 71-61 loss to Missouri Baptist in an American Midwest Conference game at the Mabee Complex.

Trailing 33-25 at halftime, the Trojans (4-13, 2-10 AMC) rallied back as Jenna Syers' free throw four minutes into the third quarter tied the game at 35. The momentum was short-lived as Missouri Baptist (5-11, 5-7) reestablished a seven-point lead with just under five minutes to play in the quarter.

The Trojans cut the deficit to two by the end of the quarter and tied the game in the fourth, but a 14-point run by the Spartans sealed the victory.

Madisen Simpson led HLGU with 16 points while Eliana McClarie added 15.


Culver drops two matches in River Crossing Tourney

The Culver-Stockton College men's volleyball team was swept 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 by Benedictine-Mesa and 25-18, 25-21, 25-17 by Campbellsville University in the River Crossing Classic at Charles Field House.

Kyle Browne led the Wildcats with 25 kills in the two matches combined, while Daniel Fohey added eight total kills.
