QUINCY -- The Quincy University men's volleyball team had a chance to pick up its first victory of the season on Friday against Missouri Baptist, but the Hawks let a 2-1 set lead slip away as they fell 25-22, 21-25, 18-25, 25-14, 15-11 in the River Crossing Tournament at Pepsi Arena.
After the Spartans won the fourth set to force the deciding fifth set, QU (0-3) came out with a quick 3-1 lead. Missouri Baptist responded with two quick points to make it 3-3, but a kill by Matt Friddle and a Spartan attack error helped the Hawks take over again at 6-5.
The Spartans retook the lead at 9-6 with a four point run, forcing the Hawks into a timeout. Try as they might, QU could never regain the momentum and eventually dropped the set and the match.
Omari Wheeler finished with a team-high 12 kills along with six digs and two blocks, while Blake Sprecher had nine kills, seven blocks and four digs. Miljan Kastratovic had 19 kills to pace Missouri Baptist and Luka Cajic had 16 kills and 11 digs.
