College basketball roundup: C-SC women trounce Trojans

HANNIBAL, Mo. -- For the second time in five days, the Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team walked away with a victory over Hannibal-LaGrange after an 85-50 shelling on Thursday night in Mabee Fieldhouse.

The Wildcats (2-1) shot 50 percent from the floor as a team and 32 percent from behind the 3-point line, while the Trojans (0-3) only hit on 39 percent of their shots.

Five players reached double figures for C-SC, led by Carly Harper's game-high 14 points. Freshman Laken Hugenburg, a standout for Canton last season, chipped in 12 points off the bench, while fellow freshman and Monroe City product Jada Summers had 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Madisen Simpson led HLGU with 13 points.

Trojans men triumph over Wildcats

HANNIBAL, Mo.

With just under a minute left in the game, Troy Green gave Culver-Stockton College a 70-69 advantage over Hannibal-LaGrange in a game that was tightly contested all night.

That was the last time the Wildcats owned the lead. The Trojans scored four points in the final 24 seconds to hand C-SC its first loss and pick up its first win in a 73-71 decision.

Grant Peters started the late push for HLGU (1-2) with a bucket 24 seconds before the final buzzer for a 71-70 lead, then Michael Hood made two free throws after a missed jumper from C-SC's Mason Vires with eight seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Hood finished with 20 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to lead the Trojans, while Eric Easter came in with 14 points and Ryan Ward had 13. Vires was the hot hand for the Wildcats (1-1) with a team-high 16 points on 5-for-13 shooting, while Michael Johnson had 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting off the bench. Thaddeus Newby and Green had 13 and 12 points respectively, and C-SC shot 37 percent from the floor compared to 50 percent for HLGU.
